A defining choice for Mongolia’s mines: How a transmission is transforming efficiency

Summer temperatures in the South Gobi Province can climb to 40°C, with heat haze distorting the distant ridgelines. In winter, the same landscape is locked in temperatures as low as -35°C and may remain snow-covered for up to 100 days. These extremes are the reality at the Mongolia Energy Resources Coal Mine, located in the country's South Gobi Province at elevations between 1,300 and 1,600 meters. Eastern spurs of the Gobi Altai Mountains run through the central area; steep mountains to the north give way to gentler hills in the south, while loose, river‑borne sediments blanket the rolling desert plain.

Operating mining trucks in these conditions is never easy. Roads are mostly gravel and dirt, crisscrossed by deep ruts left by heavily loaded trucks, while long, steep grades, sharp turns, and slippery surfaces add to the challenge. Fleet managers know that transmission reliability directly affects production rhythm. In this demanding environment, Tonly mining trucks equipped with Allison 4800 WBD Series™ fully automatic transmissions are pushing the limits of heavy-duty machinery day after day.

Rebuilding power in the Gobi

Vertex Mining Partner is the end-user operator taking on these conditions. To handle intensive overburden stripping and ore haulage, the company currently operates a core fleet of 60 Tonly TLD 96 wide-body mining dump (WBMD) trucks, powered by Weichai WP 14T engines and rated for 70 tons of payload, alongside a small number of Komatsu mining trucks. Before the fleet was upgraded to Allison transmissions, harsh operating conditions exposed every weakness in its equipment.

The transmissions previously used by the fleet had an exceptionally high failure rate. Compounding the problem, there was no specialized transmission service network across the vast expanse of Mongolia. When a truck lost power in blowing dust and sand, maintenance crews had to troubleshoot and repair it largely on their own—a difficult process that sent fleet availability and uptime into a steep decline.

“Transmission failures were our biggest headache. There was no specialist repair support locally in Mongolia, so we had to figure things out ourselves,” said Homtai Baiyar, an equipment manager at Vertex Mining Partner. “We chose Allison transmissions for our new trucks primarily because of their low failure rates and because Allison has service coverage in Mongolia. Knowing that repairs can be handled quickly gives us real peace of mind. Based on our operating experience, we decided in 2025 to add another 100 mining trucks, all equipped with Allison transmissions.”

Continuous power for extreme operating conditions

On the Gobi’s loose sand and steep gravel slopes, starting under heavy load can easily lead to rollback or an interruption in power. Allison’s Continuous Power Technology™ directly addresses this challenge. The moment the driver steps on the accelerator pedal, the hydraulic torque converter smoothly multiplies engine torque, enabling the 70-ton steel giant to pull away with confidence. Even at full throttle, seamless shifts keep strong, continuous power flowing to the wheels without hesitation. On descents, the transmission’s constant-speed downhill function helps prevent overspeed under load. Together, these technologies take the burden of complex operation off the driver.

One driver with years of experience at the mine described the difference: “A steady throttle is all it takes now—the truck selects the right gear itself. I no longer have to keep tapping the brakes downhill, so a full day behind the wheel is much easier. The Gobi is extremely dusty, but the transmission has run for a long time without any trouble. That gives me real confidence.”

Another relief for fleet managers is how straightforward routine maintenance is: regular filter and fluid changes, plus periodic checks through the prognostics function, help reduce the root causes of failure and lower the risk of downtime. “The operating conditions at ER are among the most extreme you can find anywhere in the world,” said Wang Wei, after-sales service manager at Tonly Heavy Industries. “The Allison 4800 WBD transmission is exceptionally durable and can significantly reduce fleet downtime risk.”

Comprehensive global service

Allison Transmission’s core technology keeps mining trucks running smoothly and under control, but its service network is the strongest support behind them. Even in the dust-swept heart of South Gobi, the Vertex Mining Partner maintenance team no longer works alone. Through its dedicated Technical Assistance Center (TAC), Allison enables mine-site technicians and Tonly’s service team to connect directly with an expert based in the region.

This one-to-one, real-time technical connection, combined with the increasingly comprehensive coverage of Allison’s service network in Mongolia, has dramatically shortened troubleshooting and waiting times, which previously could span weeks. For mining companies operating in extreme conditions, immediate access to coordinated support is a critical safeguard for production continuity. It was also a driving factor in Vertex’s decision to add another 100 heavy-duty trucks to its fleet.

Transmission systems able to withstand extreme operating conditions, backed by readily available and responsive service, have become an indispensable competitive advantage for Chinese mining equipment manufacturers expanding overseas. With every smooth start and trouble-free unloading, Allison Transmission is helping write a solid new chapter in the global expansion of China’s mining equipment.
